A Third Generation Family Business

History

In 1924, nineteen year old John Lawrence (Larry) Durland, took a job in the heart of the wholesale jewelry district in lower Manhattan, at Charles S. Crossman’s “The Old Mine Diamond House”.

Starting as an errand boy, Larry learned the jewelry trade from the ground up. By the late 1930s, Larry and fellow employee John D. Thomas were entrusted with co-managing Crossman’s company.

In 1942, Larry and John opened their own successful wholesale jewelry firm on Maiden Lane.  In 1948 Larry went on to found the J.L. Durland Co., in the new heart of the wholesale jewelry industry, located uptown on 46th Street.

The new company flourished under Larry Durland’s knowledge and expertise as a dealer, appraiser and consignor.  After a time the business moved to a space on Fifth Avenue.

In 1965, Larry’s son, Dan Durland, left a career in mathematics and joined the company.

Recognizing a growing demand for estate jewelry, Dan placed increasing emphasis on providing consignment services to the retail trade.

Today, the Durland Company is led by Dan Durland Jr. who joined the company in 1992.

We have thousands of pieces on consignment to scores of retailers.

Upholding our reputation for integrity, expertise, and exceptional attention to detail, our GIA graduate gemologist and expert jewelers are delighted to offer one of a kind pieces of jewelry, art & history.
